Job Description
The Resident Medical Officer (RMO) plays a critical role in the frontline management of acute and emergency medical cases across all age groups. The position is responsible for prompt clinical assessment, diagnosis, stabilization, and initial management of patients, ensuring timely escalation and coordination with Consultants and specialty teams in accordance with established clinical protocols.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
1. Clinical Responsibilities
Conduct initial triage and comprehensive clinical assessments for all emergency presentations
Manage acute and life-threatening conditions, including trauma, cardiac emergencies, respiratory distress, and other critical illnesses, in line with approved protocols
Perform essential emergency procedures, including wound suturing, splinting, intravenous access, airway management, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
Order, review, and interpret relevant diagnostic investigations such as laboratory tests, ECGs, and imaging studies
Initiate immediate treatment and stabilization measures for emergency patients
Attend to urgent medical emergencies and procedures in wards and designated clinical areas when required
Respond promptly to Code Blue activations and rapid response alerts
2. Referral & Admission Protocols
Practice strictly within defined clinical scope with no independent admitting authority
Ensure all cases are discussed with and referred to the appropriate Consultant or specialty team for admission and definitive management decisions
Provide clear case summaries, treatment details, and recommendations during referrals and patient handovers
3. Coordination & Communication
Work closely with nursing staff, allied health professionals, and multidisciplinary teams to ensure coordinated patient care
Recognize and promptly escalate deteriorating or complex cases to senior clinicians
Maintain accurate, timely, and comprehensive medical documentation in patient records
4. Administrative & Legal Responsibilities
Ensure complete and accurate clinical documentation, including referral notes and follow-up instructions
Comply fully with institutional policies, medical ethics, infection control standards, patient confidentiality, and consent requirements
Participate actively in clinical audits, governance activities, and quality improvement initiatives
5. Education & Professional Development
Attend departmental teaching sessions, case reviews, and Continuing Medical Education (CME) programs
Participate in emergency simulations and disaster drills
Support the orientation, supervision, and training of staff, where applicable
6. Other Responsibilities
Perform additional duties as assigned in support of departmental and hospital operations
