Job Description
Position: Microbiologist
Role Purpose:
Support research and development in microbiology and chemical testing on food, drugs, drug compounds, clinical, and environmental samples.
Responsible for research experiments and data integrity as assigned by management.
Design and implement microbiology/chemical experiments to achieve intended outcomes.
Mentor Research Assistants/Graduate Research Assistants (GRA).
Register as a signatory for food microbiology tests with Majlis Juruanalisis Makanan Malaysia (MJMM).
Principal Accountabilities:
General Roles:
Conduct microbiology/chemical testing on clinical, food, environmental, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and other customer samples.
Develop, modify, verify, and validate testing methods.
Analyze results and provide statements of conformity or opinions and interpretations.
Report, review, and authorize test results.
Identify and address deviations in laboratory procedures with the Technical Manager.
Maintain quality standards and technical records according to ISO 17025 and SAMM requirements.
Support project management with contract manufacturing, services, and testing facilities.
Collect, compile, interpret, and document experimental data.
Design and perform laboratory research experiments in collaboration with other scientists.
Manage site inventory, order supplies and equipment, and maintain laboratory facilities.
Support development and management of research protocols for drug discovery efforts.
Achieve business goals and promote cross-functional teamwork.
General Technical Duties:
Operate instruments such as food homogenizers/masticators, microscopes, colony counters, autoclaves, and other analytical instruments.
Identify and classify microorganisms in human, environmental, and food samples using microscopes.
Perform routine testing, sample preparation, and stability testing related to microbiology/chemical analysis.
Oversee lab personnel performing microbiology/chemical analysis work.
Serve as a registered signatory for microbiology tests with MJMM.
Business Development:
Assist in developing business, marketing, and promotional plans for services and events.
Sales & Marketing:
Prepare sales materials, marketing information, and present materials when appropriate.
Other Responsibilities:
Manage and participate in the development and implementation of departmental and institutional goals, policies, and priorities.
Communicate problems and proposed solutions to management/supervisors.
Perform other work as assigned based on project and company needs.
Job Requirements:
Degree in science, preferably Microbiology, Biomedical Sciences, Chemistry, or Biotechnology.
Experience working under a chemist or registered food analyst, or at least 4 years of relevant experience in food analysis.
Experience in microbiology sampling and testing, and handling testing instrumentation.
Experience in handling various samples for microbiology testing, including cell culture preparation (an added advantage).
Registered signatory with MJMM (an advantage).
Familiarity with laboratory computer systems and willingness to learn new software programs.
Excellent data collection and laboratory notebook maintenance skills.
Expert-level technical skills.
Flexibility and ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
Knowledge and understanding of technical and laboratory operational requirements, including:
MS ISO/IEC 17025 and related SAMM requirements.
Principles of testing or measurement.
Standards, methods, and specifications for accreditation.
Estimation of measurement uncertainties for accreditation.
