Job Description
We are seeking a highly competent and detail-oriented Radiation Protection Officer (RPO) to oversee and ensure the highest standards of radiation safety, regulatory compliance, and operational excellence across our medical facility. This role is critical in safeguarding patients, staff, and the organisation while maintaining full compliance with national regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
1. Radiation Safety & Regulatory Compliance
Serve as the designated Radiation Protection Officer in full accordance with AELB requirements.
Ensure strict compliance with the Atomic Energy Licensing Act 1984, AELB regulations, and Ministry of Health (MOH) standards.
Manage, maintain, and renew all AELB licences, approvals, and mandatory regulatory documentation.
Develop, implement, and continuously monitor the facility’s Radiation Protection Programme (RPP).
2. Clinical & Operational Oversight
Oversee radiation safety practices across radiotherapy, nuclear medicine, diagnostic radiology, and CT services (as applicable).
Monitor and evaluate radiation exposure levels for both patients and staff, ensuring adherence to prescribed dose limits.
Ensure appropriate shielding, controlled areas, safety signage, and access controls are in place and maintained.
Review and advise on radiation safety aspects related to equipment installation, commissioning, upgrades, and decommissioning.
3. Staff Monitoring, Training & Advisory
Conduct radiation safety training and induction programmes for doctors, radiographers, medical physicists, nurses, and support staff.
Provide expert advice to management on radiation-related risks, safety measures, and mitigation strategies.
4. Quality Assurance & Incident Management
Participate actively in quality assurance (QA) and continuous quality improvement initiatives related to radiation safety.
Investigate radiation incidents, near misses, or over-exposure events, and prepare reports for internal review and regulatory submission when required.
Prepare audit documentation and support internal reviews, regulatory inspections, and external audits.
5. Advisory, Collaboration & Accreditation Support
Work collaboratively with medical physicists, radiologists, oncologists, radiotherapists, engineers, and clinical teams.
Act as the primary radiation safety advisor to management and regulatory authorities.
Support accreditation processes, compliance reviews, and regulatory audits.
Job Requirements
Diploma or Degree in Radiography, Medical Physics, Nuclear Science, Radiological Science, or a related discipline.
Certified Radiation Protection Officer (RPO) recognised by AELB (Malaysia).
Minimum 2–5 years of experience in radiation safety within a hospital or healthcare setting.
Practical experience with radiotherapy and/or diagnostic imaging equipment is highly preferred.
Strong knowledge of AELB licensing, audits, and inspection processes.
Excellent attention to detail with strong documentation and reporting skills.
Effective communication, training, and presentation abilities.
Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a multidisciplinary healthcare environment.
