Marine Training Centre

The MTC medical clinic provides the required medical clearances of seafarers for them to take up employment on international vessels. It also provides medical clearances for labour mobility workers and scholarship students to Australia and New Zealand. Without the approved medical personnel to issue, the required medical clearance there would be a barrier to future employment with international shipping companies.

Overview

The Kiribati Marine Training Centre offers seafaring and fisheries training and catering classes, with certificates that are recognised by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) under their Standards, Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW and STCW-F). The MTC also offers a range of short courses. MTC graduates have traditionally either worked overseas to provide remittances for extended families and/or joined the domestic maritime or fisheries workforce that supports public and private sector enterprise. Kiribati merchant seafarers working on international vessels have historically made an important contribution to the country’s remittance flows.
